Radiation

For the NWABR Bio Expo project in my Honors Biology class, I chose to create a website to better inform ordinary people about radiation and its affect on humans. Since the beginning of techology boom during the 20th century, more and more electronics are becoming an important part of our life, from the creation of microwaves to the powerful smartphones that fits in our hand that we can't get by a day without it..  This leaves people wondering, are the electronics around us harmful to our body? This lead to myths like "Standing around the microwave while it is moving is going to kill you." and " Using cell phones will give you cancer."

In order to better educate myself and other people about radiation, I chose to create a website due to the amount of options you have in making a website, which makes making a website a lot of fun, since I can put the variety of information and pictures wherever I want it to be. Not only this, due to the amount of information this topic has, using a website allows me to organize the informations in to each sections, so people can freely choose what they want to read and have a easier time understand the effects of radiation on human.

My goal of creating this website is to inform people of what radiation is, it is important because 10% of the cancers are caused by radiations.  I intend to convey radiation by using explaining the causes and how radiation work in a molecular levels so we can have a better understand of how the energy is moved and the way the effects they have on your body using words and pictures. Not only this, you can learn about the risk factors and the treatments available for radiation sickness, with this, you can find a way to treat yourself or someone else in the case of emergency. The reason I decided to use Radiation as my topic is because in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, three reactor core melted down during the accident which led to radioactive water leaking into the Pacific Ocean. Due to this, there are many rumors about the radioactive water that was leaked during the earthquake in Japan contaminated the water here in Washington, this caught my interest to research about the harmful effects of radiation. With this website, I hope it answers the misunderstanding and the questions people have about radiation in their mind.
